غدًا، الإثنين، سيشهد العالم كسوفًا كليًا للشمس، ولكن للأسف، لن تكون مصر والمنطقة العربية قادرة على رؤيته. يمكن متابعة الظاهرة في المكسيك والولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وكندا حيث سيكون ككسوف كلي، بينما سيكون قابلًا للرؤية ككسوف جزئي في غرب أوروبا وأمريكا الشمالية وشمال أمريكا الجنوبية، إلى جانب المحيطين الباسفيكي والأطلسي والقارة القطبية الشمالية.
يمتد الكسوف الكلي من بدايته إلى نهايته لمدة تقريبية تبلغ خمس ساعات و10 دقائق. وعند ذروته، سيغطي قرص القمر نسبة تقدر بحوالي 105% من قرص الشمس، ويشمل مساحة تبلغ 197 كيلومتر مربع. يتوقع أن يستمر الكسوف الكلي لمدة 4 دقائق و28 ثانية.
يعتبر الكسوف الكلي نوعًا من أنواع الكسوفات الشمسية التي تحدث عادةً عندما يكون القمر في طور المحاق في نهاية دورته الشهرية حول الأرض، وقبل ولادة الهلال الجديد. يحدث ذلك عندما يتم تمركز القمر بين الأرض والشمس على خط الاقتران أثناء تواجده على إحدى العقدتين الصاعدة أو الهابطة أو قريبًا منهما. وتتغير المسافة بين القمر والأرض بين 363 ألف و405 آلاف كيلومتر نتيجة لهذا التغيير في المسافة، مما يؤدي إلى تغيير حجم القمر ظاهريًا بالنسبة لنا، حيث يبدو أكبر عندما يكون قريبًا منا، مما يسمح بحدوث الكسوف الكلي.
يُعتبر الكسوف الشمسي مؤشرًا مهمًا لبدايات الأشهر الهجرية؛ إذ يشير حدوثه في وضع الاقتران إلى اقتراب ولادة الهلال الجديد، ويُعتبر مركز الكسوف موعدًا لميلاد القمر الجديد.
